More efforts in reaching the public- Putting up our informational Save Orangutans Pamphlets at 7-Eleven store!!

One of our Bidong Orangutan Saviours (B.O.S) team members had come up with the idea of putting up our BOS "Save Orangutans" pamphlets at the 7-Eleven store in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu. Thus, On 7th September 2010, BOS crew had once again made a trip to Kuala Terengganu town centre to find a 7-Eleven store. After we had found the shop and explained to the shop manager about our purpose of visit, the store manager as well as the other 7-Eleven sale members had been very supportive of our efforts and had helped us in putting up the pamphlet on their notice board in the store.

Distributing pamphlets to the public at the State Building (Wisma Negeri) and the nearby areas in Kuala Terengganu

Our first step in spreading the messages of awareness about orangutans extinction and the importance of saving the species to the public is by distributing informational pamphlets about orangutans to them. On 30th September 2010, Monday, 300 pamphlets have been distributed to the visitors at  the State Building or "Wisma Negeri" in Kuala Terengganu in 5 hours. The pamphlets were distributed by Bidong Orangutan Saviours (B.O.S) volunteers who have grouped themselves into 5 groups of 3 students for this purpose. The pamphlets have been distributed to the visitors at the lobby of the building as well as at the building's car park. Hopefully the information about the orangutan extinction and ways we can do to save them would be beneficial for the general public and would deepen their awareness to support the efforts done in saving orangutans by many organisations such as WWF in some possible ways such as donation and recycling paper to reduce the number of trees cut each year which will save the orangutan habitat. Thanks to all B.O.S volunteers!

B.O.S City Tour to Spread the Words of Love for Orangutans among the Government Workers

On 29th August 2010, Bidong Orangutan Saviours (B.O.S) team members have made a tour to the city to spread the messages of awareness and love for orangutans among the public as well as the government bodies. Our first destination is Wildlife Conservation Department (PERHILITAN) Terengganu. Our mission is to create and spread awareness about the orangutans extinction issue and to promote to the public to support the conservation efforts done in Borneo to save orangutans from extinction. The public have been informed that their supports can be channeled by donating to some organisations that are doing the rehabilitation of orangutans in Borneo forests such as Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation centre of directly to WWF.

B.O.S Trip to Wildlife Conservation Department (PERHILITAN)

On Sunday, 29th August 2010 Bidong Orangutan Saviours (B.O.S) have visited  Wildlife Conservation Department or "Jabatan Perlindungan Hidupan Liar" (PERHILITAN) in Malay translation at Wisma Negeri, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu. The purpose of the visit is to gain more information about wildlife conservation activities including orangutans as well as to voice out our support for orangutan conservation . The representative from PERHILITAN En Mohd Syawal explained that even though the department did not directly involve in orangutan conservation in Borneo, they were strongly supportive of the efforts taken by PERHILITAN in Sabah and Sarawak to conserve orangutans.

During visit to the PERHILITAN, we learnt some general information about orangutans. En Syawal explained that orangutans are endemic species which live only in specific areas such as in Borneo forests. They are omnivour and feed on leaves, fruits and fish. In fact, orangutans who live in Borneo forests are able to catch fish for food! They are also easily adaptable to their new environment.

Also, from the visit, we have had the opportunity to spread information about orangutans extinction issue and to get some of the staffs from the department to sign in our save orangutans petition book. All the staffs have shown a very positive reactions and comments for our efforts in supporting orangutans conservation. All staffs have also received a copy of our save orangutans brochure. In return, the department have agreed to form a linkage with our school to educate the students more about wildlife conservation especially the endangered species such as the orangutan. We have received some souvenirs from the department at the end of our visit.
Thank you PERHILITAN! We love you!
